Inspiration #11

August has been a busy month for me and I'm exhausted! I can't wait to relax this weekend. But before summer comes to a close, one more round up of some pictures that inspired me this past week:

1. This photo is part of a really inspiring article, "The Top 5 Lessons I Learned About Design from my Five-Year Old Nephew" (Go Media Zine) This is a MUST read for any artist, parent or anyone who doesn't have a cold, cold heart.

2. These dynamic digital illustrations are just remarkable. This is my favorite from the series, but you should check out the rest of them. (Design Taxi)

3.  These architectural sketches and dark yet inviting. (Pinterest)

4. What a beautiful skirt. I love how the shapes over lap each other and interact with each other (Pinterest)

5. Sure this room might be overwhelming at first... but there is so many details to see. I could stare at it for hours. (Pinterest)

Have a great holiday weekend!

Permanent Doodles

Yes... permanent doodles. Not sharpies. Not graffiti. Tattoos! I had the honor of designing a tattoo for an old friend. He was looking for a Polynesian design for his upper arm and shoulder. I had never (knowingly) drawn in the Polynesian style, but upon research I realized my doodles were similar. Right away I was drawn in by the geometric shapes and knew this was a great project for me.

After a lot of sketches, this is what we came up with:

The tattoo artist said it had too many details that wouldn't translate well into a tattoo. But overall it would work. It was my first tattoo design, so I didn't know what was going to be too intricate. Good to know for next time.

After 1 tattoo session this is what it looks like:

He has 3 more sessions before the tattoo is finished, so I will keep you posted.

Do you want a tattoo?

In case you missed it: Untapped Cities Recap

You all know I love to doodle, and I love geometric patterns. But what you might not know is I studied architecture for 3 brief semesters of college. Although it wasn't for me, I still deeply appreciate architecture and buildings..

I case you missed it, I did an, architectural doodle, or ArchiDoodle as I call it, in June for Untapped Cities. It is based on the amazing and long time abandoned building at 5 Beekman Street, famously named Temple Court. It is now being turned into luxury condos. This archidoodle is second in the series.

If you pop over to the Untapped Cities website you can see the doodle and read a short paragraph on the history of the building and a few interesting facts.

Inspiration #10

The things that interested me this week were all over the map. From typography to geometric design to packaging:

1. Map of ancient courses of the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau, MO by Harold N.Fisk, 1944. (Pinterest)

2. I love how the type interacts with the photo (Pinterest)

3. Organized chaos. I love how the different layers of circles affect the layers above and below following no particular rules (Pinterest)

4. This packaging elevates the standard take out meal into something elegant (Pinterest)

5. "Ghostly International’s newest limited edition art release from Andy Gilmore has launched at The Ghostly Store and it is more than awesome. We wrote about Andy’s amazing intricate geometric work back in 2011 and I thought it might be fun to see what he’s up to. Finding inspiration in nature and then translating that into a complex geometric grid is what Andy does best and so I was over the moon (pun intended) to see new prints from him that incorporates his signature computer graphics floating in outer space paired with natural images like nebulas." Blog Mention: Accidental Vix

Last week my facebook friend and fellow artist/crafter, known as Accidental Vix, mentioned my work on her blog. We met about a year and a half ago through a mutal friend, Rob Jelinski. She lives across "the pond" but we have bonded over our love of art and architecture.

Please check out the post where she mentions the Washington Square Arch I drew, and currently have for sale on Etsy. Also please follow her! Accidental Vix is such a driven and diverse artist. I truly admire her drive and productivity. Her architectural sketches/drawings always make me smile. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

UPDATE

I've been a little MIA lately from the blog, but that's not for lack of work. I've been so blessed to be incredibly busy with my Etsy store! I've made TWENTY THREE crayon letters so far this year! All my rulers, Xacto blades and cutting boards are covered in crayon dust. I've bought out all the crayons from multiple craft stores and a few Targets. I've sold some other doodles and custom pieces, but the crayon letters have been wildly popular! Here are a few of my favorite letters:

My studio also got an upgrade... from a corner to an entire room! It's not 100% set up yet, but it's slowly getting there.

Throwback Thursday!

Remember my first post?! That was almost EIGHT HUNDRED posts ago, in 2009!

Go for it, read it again, or for the first time. Not much yet everything has changed since then.

Inspiration #8

These things caught my eye and/or inspired me this week:

1. Judging by my ArchiDoodles for Untapped Cities I'm obsessed with Art Deco lately. These shoes embody everything from that era. I want them so bad! (from StyleMePretty)

(found on Amazon for $96... too much for me. I'm so sad)

2. There are so many little creatures in this drawing. Found on MyModernMet:

3. This would be one hell of a "Where's Waldo". Manabu Ikeda is the master of pen and ink. Found on This is Colossal:

4. Beautiful Travelogue by Chandler O'Leary from This is Colossal:

5. Vibrant digital VW print from Pinterest

Press Mention!

On July 29 my Rockefeller Center ArchiDoodle was mentioned in Refinery29's "5 Things to Know this AM". I am shocked and very honored to be mentioned among a VH1's Mob Wives event, Sharknado, and a Hampton's trunk show event.

Thank you Refinery29 for thinking my doodle is something people need to know about!
Thank you Untapped Cities for never giving up me, a scatterbrained artist with too many ideas and not enough time.

Thank YOU for sticking by me!
