Caffeine Monday #7

Was it as hard for you to get out bed as it was for me?! It was cold out there, and my bed was just so toasty. Sadly I know it will get worse as it's only October. I was happy to know my hot tea was only a few steps away.

This was my entry for Starbuck's white cup contest. We could have submitted one per day, but I was busy at that time, and only managed to finish one.

I didn't win, womp womp, but I thought the cup that did was very deserving! I hope they hold a contest like this again soon. I'm bringing my "A game" next time!!

In Development

I have been playing around with my doodles in photoshop recently. I select square portions of the doodle and then mirror them along the horizontal and vertical axi (is that plural for axis?).  What I have come up with is pretty cool, well at least in my opinion!  I think I am going to upload them onto spoonflower.com and see how they look as fabric!

Interesting Article About Doodling

"[Doodling is] often considered an empty practice, a waste of time. [Doodlers are] seen as an empty mind puttering along with the busy work of scribbling."

I have felt this way so many times, but I found a well written article from Smashing Magazine that expresses to those who don't doodle how important it is for visual learners such as myself:

Sketch of the Day

I have recently started doing a doodle a day(ish)... yes like my blog title suggests! They are 5x7" and I have been putting them up for sale for $10 on Instagram and Facebook. Here are a few I did recently:

If you would like any of the doodles here are the rules:
1. Send me a Facebook message on Downtown Doodler letting me know you would like to purchase the sketch of the day.
2. If you are first to send me a message, I will write back and let you know that it's yours. I will mark it 'sold' in a comment on the sketch of the day.
3. If it's yours, send a Paypal payment of $10 to bmochachino@gmail.com and I will mail it (free shipping, yay!). So, please let me know your shipping information.
4. No refunds/ exchanges. Payment needs to be made within 7 days or it goes back up for sale.
I'll put all unsold doodles on Etsy when I get around to it.

Permanent Doodles

Yes... permanent doodles. Not sharpies. Not graffiti. Tattoos! I had the honor of designing a tattoo for an old friend. He was looking for a Polynesian design for his upper arm and shoulder. I had never (knowingly) drawn in the Polynesian style, but upon research I realized my doodles were similar. Right away I was drawn in by the geometric shapes and knew this was a great project for me.

After a lot of sketches, this is what we came up with:

The tattoo artist said it had too many details that wouldn't translate well into a tattoo. But overall it would work. It was my first tattoo design, so I didn't know what was going to be too intricate. Good to know for next time.

After 1 tattoo session this is what it looks like:

He has 3 more sessions before the tattoo is finished, so I will keep you posted.

Do you want a tattoo?

Caffeine Monday #5

If you are on the East Coast of the US, I hope all of you survived Winter Storm Nemo! If you aren't, well I hope your weekend was relaxing.

We got about 11 inches here in North-Central New Jersey. It didn't disrupt life too much, although I left work at 3:30pm on Friday (only to work from home until 9pm) my fiance and I were out-and-about on Saturday afternoon running some errands.

Here are some Monday morning doodles. Enjoy!

Architecture + doodles

I've been trying to figure out for a while what direction to take my doodles in. I have been stalled at the same style for awhile and I was starting to get bored. I was looking to combine my two loves... doodling and architecture, but I couldn't think of how. Then for Christmas my brother got me a New York City art deco book. Then it hit me how to combine the two.

Here is the start of my first Archidoodle:

I plan on filling a large 20x30 page with this pattern.

Can you guess the building?

What is your favorite NYC building?
